Overview
Blood bank, GMSH 16 is a licensed blood bank located near the New OPD block of the hospital. It caters to the need of blood of patients suffering from severe anaemia, cancer, surgeries, trauma, obstetric cases etc. Two Blood Storage Centers in Civil Hospital, Sector 22 and Civil Hospital, Manimajra are also provided blood. Voluntary Blood Donation is the cornerstone for providing safe blood to patients, so camps are organized regularly to meet the demand of blood.

Blood is separated into various components after collection.

No processing charges for Blood are levied for patients of Public health facilities. For all the other Hospitals the following are free.

For other cases Rs. 300/- are charged as processing charges for Private Hospitals.
TYPE OF BLOOD PRODUCTS
Whole blood from a single blood donor can now be divided into three or four blood components which have to be stored at various temperatures. The various products are as given below -
- Whole Blood (WB)
- Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC)
- Platelet Concentrate( PC)
- Fresh Frozen Plasma
FAQS ABOUT BLOOD DONATION
1) When is Blood Transfusion Required?
There are many situations in which patients need blood like severe anaemia due to chronic diseases , thallaesemia, cancer, major surgeries, trauma, acute bleeding during child birth
2) Why do we need to donate blood ?
Blood has no substitute so we need donors to meet the requirement of blood.
3) Who can donate Blood ?
Any healthy person who is not suffering from anyillness, within the age group of 18 – 65 years with a body weight as minimum 45 kg / 50 kg depending on the volume ofblood bag and having haemoglobin >12.5 gm%.
Medical examination is done to determine the fitness of donor.
4) Does a donor need to do anything special before donation?
The donor should have eaten a light meal before donation.
5) How long does the donation take?
The procedure takes about eight minutes. However, from start to finish (filling form, post donation rest etc) the entire process takes about 20 minutes.
6) Can a donor contract any disease after donation ?
Sterile blood bags are used for each donor and all precautions are taken.
7) When is the blood replenished after donation ?
The body replaces blood volume or plasma within 24-48 hours. Red cells need about four to eight weeks for complete replacement.
8) Can a donor work after donating blood?
Routine work is absolutely fine after the initial rest. Rigorous physical work should be avoided for a few hours.
9) How frequently a donor can donate blood?
Three months is a very safe interval between blood donations provided the donor is fit.
10) Are there any other benefits of blood donation?
Yes, blood donation is a noble, selfless service. It gives the donor a feeling of joy and contentment.
